The reality faced by thousands
There are over 40,000 mothers in Lithuania raising children on their own.
Nearly 60% of them would be at risk of poverty without additional support from the state.
The highest risk of poverty affects women without higher education and those living outside major cities.
Many of them are missing not just financial stability, but also the knowledge, skills, and support needed to regain control over their lives and build a more sustainable future – for themselves and for their children.
Looking at annual trends, between 3,500 and 4,500 families with children divorce each year in Lithuania. In 95% of cases, the primary responsibility for childcare falls on mothers.
There are over 40,000 women in Lithuania who carry the main responsibility of raising children. While in cities more than 70% of them earn their own income, the situation is much more challenging in rural areas – nearly one-third of women rely on social benefits due to a lack of job opportunities or the ability to earn enough.
But financial hardship is only one side of the story.
Women who try to return to the job market after a break for motherhood often find themselves in a particularly difficult situation. They face evolving job market demands, limited employment opportunities, and often a lack of self-confidence.
Many lack not only financial stability, but also the knowledge, skills and support to regain control of their lives and build a more sustainable future - for themselves and their children.
Independent Mothers Seeking Opportunities
Project vision
The “1000 Women” project offers a new opportunity for women raising children on their own to regain self-confidence, restore emotional stability, and find genuine support.
Through mentorship, practical training, and emotional well-being development, the project creates an environment where women grow stronger, braver, and ready to enter a new stage in their lives and careers.
The goal of the project is to provide long-term tools that help women build a sustainable financial foundation and strengthen emotional resilience. In doing so, the well-being of both women and their children is supported – today and in the future.
